This song can be described as a modern jazz song mixing major influences from Balkan folk music and Arabic world music. It's based on a tension between "east and west" because when I was living in New York City and studying the tradition of jazz music I was more drawn to the ethnic music of Eastern Europe and the Arabic countries. Therefore I found the title "East River" to be fitting since my daily NYC walk was along that river.
